Are you an expat getting ready to leave South Korea?

Are you an expat getting ready to leave South Korea? If you've been working here, you have likely been contributing to the Korean National Pension Service (NPS). The good news is that you can probably get all that money back as a Lump-sum Refund before you board your flight.

Based on the official NPS guidelines, here is a clear, step-by-step breakdown of how to claim your cash.

■ Who is Eligible for the NPS Lump-sum Refund?

Not every foreigner can get a refund. Under Korean law, your eligibility depends entirely on your nationality and visa type.

1. Nationality Agreement

Your home country must have a reciprocal Social Security Agreement with South Korea that specifically covers lump-sum refunds.

Eligible Countries: United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, and several others.

2. Visa Status

If your country has an agreement, you must also hold an eligible workplace visa. For instance, E-2 (Foreign Language Instructor) and E-7 (Particular Profession) visa holders are generally fully eligible to claim their refund when leaving the country permanently.

■ Required Documents You Must Prepare

Do not wait until the day of your flight to figure this out. You must visit a local NPS office within 1 month before your official flight departure date with the following documents in hand:

Application Form (Available directly at the NPS office)

Valid Passport

Alien Registration Card (ARC)

One-way Flight Ticket (Proof of your permanent departure)

Bank Statement or Copy of Bankbook (If you choose a bank transfer)

※ Crucial Warning: If you choose a bank transfer, the name on your overseas bank account must exactly match the name on your passport, or the transfer will fail.

■ How to Get Cash Directly at Incheon Airport

If you don't want to wait weeks for an international wire transfer, you can opt for Airport Payment. This is the absolute fastest way to get your money in cash.

Step 1. Request Airport Payment at the NPS Office
When you submit your documents at the local NPS branch, explicitly tell the officer that you want to collect your money at the airport.

Step 2. Keep Your Receipt Safe

The officer will hand you an "Airport Payment Receipt." Keep this safe along with your passport—you cannot get your cash without it.

Step 3. Collect Your Cash Before Security

On your departure day, head to the designated bank booth (Shinhan, Woori, or Hana Bank) inside Incheon International Airport before passing through the security gates. Present your receipt and passport, and you will receive your refund immediately in USD or your preferred currency.
